Natural Products

Chemical study of plants from diverse botanical families such as: Asteraceae, Burseraceae, Euphorbiaceae, Lamiaceae, Fabaceae, Solanaceae and Verbenaceae, among others.

Biodirected isolation of medicinal plants in search for bioactive compounds. Our interest in biological activities is diverse and includes: anti-inflammatory, inhibitors of cancerigen cells replication, antioxidants, inhibitors of HIV reverse transcriptase, antiprotozoal, antidiarrheal, hipoglucemiant, and with effect over the central nervous system.

Transformation of natural products by electrochemical, enzymatic and biomimetic methods.

The Natural Products Department has sixteen researchers and one technician, working in eleven laboratories. The Department works with the support of the Biological Testing Laboratory and the Insects Culture Laboratory, where the above mentioned activities are evaluated.

Organic Chemistry

The main research lines of study are free radicals chemistry, asymmetric synthesis, heterogeneous catalysis, synthesis of heterocyclic compounds with biological activity, fullerene chemistry, supramolecular chemistry, synthesis of natural products such as terpenes, alkaloids and acetogenines, nuclear magnetic resonance and mass spectrometry.

Physical Chemistry

The department members have developed a research connection with an interdisciplinary character which focuses on theoretical and experimental chemistry. The theoretical studies are mainly developing in the field of quantum chemistry and statistical thermodynamics where numerical methods are heavily involved.

The experimental studies are focused into a set of issues related to photochemistry, femtochemistry, stereoelectronics effects, weak interactions, molecular recognition and the reaction mechanisms.
