ALBERTO SANDOVAL LANDAZÚRI (1918 – 2002)

Alberto Sandoval Landázuri (1918 – 2002), studied his BSc. in Chemistry at the National School of Chemical Sciences. Later on, he got a PhD. of Sciences from the School of Graduated of the UNAM, with the research about the “Study of polyenes through chromatography and the spectrophotometric analysis” under the guidance of Laszlo Zechmeister from the “Tecnológico de California” in Pasadena (CALTECH). Alberto Sandoval was the first Mexican student in the whole University who received a PhD. Degree in 1947. His main contribution was to consolidate the chemical research in the IQ of the UNAM. He was the director of the IQ from 1953 to 1971.

 

OCTAVIO MANCERA ECHEVERRÍA (1919-2004)

Octavio Mancera Echeverría (1919-2004), studied his BSc. in Chemistry at the National School of Chemical Sciences. Later on he got his PhD. at the Oxford University with the research “Experiments about the synthesis of penicillin and its analogues”, under the guidance of Robert Robinson. He joined as a researcher at the Institute of Chemistry (IQ), from 1947 to 1954. It was part of the IQ researchers who participated in the IQ Cooperation Program of the UNAM and Syntex Research Laboratories. Among his most important achievements as researcher it was to contribute in the research works which were published in specialized journals such as the JACS, among others. He also was one of the first researchers who started the Mexican students’ training process at Syntex through the direction of BSc. and Ph.D.’s theses.

 

JOSÉ IRIARTE GUZMÁN (1921-2004)

José Iriarte Guzmán (1921-2004), studied his BSc. in Chemistry at the National School of Chemical Sciences. He started his Ph.D. studies at the Iowa State College, USA, under the direction of Henry Gilman, but he didn’t get the degree. Later, he became a researcher at the IQ from 1947 to 1954. He was part of the IQ researchers who participated in the IQ Cooperation Program of UNAM and Syntex Research Laboratories. Among his most important achievements as researcher it was to contribute in the research works which were published in specialized journals such as the JACS, among others. He also was one of the first researchers who started the Mexican students’ training process at Syntex through the direction of BSc. and Ph.D.’s theses. He worked together as well with the teaching staff of the Ph.D. program, at the Graduated School of the UNAM in the subject of Physical Chemistry.

JESÚS ROMO ARMERÍA (1922-1977)

Jesús Romo Armería (1922-1977), studied his BSc. in Biology and Pharmaceutical Chemistry at the National School of Chemical Sciences. He also obtained the Ph.D. degree from the Graduated School of the UNAM, with the research “Catalytic Hydrogenation of 1, 2-Benzantraquinona-9, 10. Some derivatives of 2 hydroxynaphthoquinone 1, 4” under the direction of Antonio Madinaveitia. He became a researcher at the IQ from 1943 to 1977. He was part of the IQ researchers who participated in the IQ Cooperation Program of UNAM and Syntex Research Laboratories. Among his most important achievements as researcher it was to contribute in the research works which were published in specialized journals such as the JACS, among others. He also was one of the first researchers who started the Mexican students’ training process at Syntex through the direction of BSc. and Ph.D.’s theses. He worked together as well with the teaching staff of the Ph.D. program, at the Graduated school of the UNAM in the subject of Organic chemistry. He was director of the IQ from 1971 to 1977. The maximum recognition for his professional work and scientific contributions in the field of chemistry was the National Prize of Sciences and Arts in 1971.

HUMBERTO FLORES BELTRÁN DEL RÍO (1925-1991)

Humberto Flores Beltrán Del Río (1925-1991), studied his BSc. in Biology and Pharmaceutical Chemistry at the National School of Chemical Sciences. Despite he did not get his Ph.D. he taught the subject Inorganic and Analytical Chemistry at the Ph.D. program of the Graduated School from the UNAM. Also, he was one of the first researchers who started the training program for Mexican students at the IQ through the direction of BSc. theses. One of his daily activities at the IQ was as consultant of the IQ’s library. In those days if someone asked where to find certain information Humberto Flores would have known exactly where to find it.

HUMBERTO ESTRADA OCAMPO (1913-1989)

Humberto Estrada Ocampo (1913-1989), studied his BSc. in Chemistry at the National School of Chemical Sciences. He also obtained the Ph.D. degree in Sciences from the Graduated School of the UNAM, with the research “Study of the photopolymerization of the anthracene. Dihydro 9.10. Anthracene and of the thymoquinone. I. Anthracene and dihydro 9, 10. Anthracene II Thymoquinone” under the direction of Antonio Madinaveitia. He joined the IQ as researcher from 1949 to 1965. Moreover, he was one of the first researchers who started the training program for Mexican students at the IQ through the direction of BSc. theses.

JOSÉ F. HERRÁN ARELLANO (1915-1983)

José F. Herrán Arellano (1915-1983), studied his BSc. in Chemistry at the National School of Chemical Sciences. He also obtained the Ph.D. degree in Sciences from the Graduated School of the UNAM, with the research “The synthesis of the 1-etil-2, 5-dimetil-8-metoxi-fenantreno and the dienone-phenol rearrangement in the delta 1, 4-dien-3-ones steroidal” under the direction of Octavio Mancera. He joined the IQ as researcher from 1947 to 1965 later he moved to the School of Chemistry and Head of the Department of Advanced Studies where he opened different fields of research in Chemistry. Also, he was one of the first researchers who started the Mexican students’ training process through the direction of BSc. and Ph.D.’s theses.
